The Lovington High School Wildcats should definitely be celebrated for bringing home 16 State Championships in football, and nothing should ever be taken away from that achievement. In fact, we hope the trend continues for many years to come. But Lovington as a city is more than football due to its unique climate and geographic location close to some mighty popular sports venues. There’s rodeo and skiing. Bicycling and running. Auto racing and tennis. Motor cycle racing and track and field. And on and on it goes. So yes, while we fully celebrate the Wildcats football legacy dating all the way back to 1951 we need to look forward to the many other diverse sporting activities this city of close to 10,000 can enjoy outside of a Friday night frenzy. And just as it produced stars like NFL linebacker Brian Urlacher and golfers Ronnie Black and Sean Murphy, we bet there’s going to be future namesakes in other sports beyond these three. So it’s with that premonition in mind that we keep tabs on all sporting activities in and near this wonderful county seat of Lea County, New Mexico.
