America is full of sports towns. Every major city in America and even some small towns produce sports stars. New York has its street legend basketball players, Chicago churn out basketball, football, and baseball stars, every town in Texas and Florida is a football heaven for college recruiters. But the best sports town in the country is Los Angeles. L. A. is the choice because of the wide variety of sports stars that grew up in the area. Basketball, football, baseball, soccer, surfing, track and field, tennis, even NASCAR stars hail from the L. A. area. In addition to stars of mainstream sports like Paul Pierce of the Boston Celtics and Tom Brady, the star quarterback of the New England Patriots, L. A. also produces stars of lesser known like the Williams sisters in tennis. Serena and Vennis hail from Compton where they learned the game from their father. Southern Cal is the surfing and body building capital of the world. There is an argument that other areas produce more sports talent than Los Angeles, but for the sheer number of stars from nearly every major sport in the world, the city of angels has to be the number one choice.

Despite it being a small town Lovington, New Mexico offers many sports choices for both spectators and athletes alike.
The Lovington Wildcats high school football team has been one of the best in New Mexico winning 17 state titles, four of which have been in the last six years. Brian Urlacher is just one of the former players on the Wildcats. Since then he has established himself as one of the best defensive players in the NFL and currently plays for the Chicago bears. Watching the football games are one of the favorite activities for many of the residents of this town.
However, football isn’t the only choice of sports in the town. Golfers can go hit the links at the Lovington Country Club which is home to an 18 hole golf course and a driving range with 25 tees. Lovington is just 20 miles from Hobbs, New Mexico which also boasts 2 golf courses.
The area’s rich western history and climate also makes it a great place for equestrians or those just interested in learning how to ride horses.
During the summer there are plenty of activities for sports enthusiasts who want to participate in them and in the fall everyone can look forward to watching one of the best football teams in New Mexico.

Before you get all hunkered down for the winter with no real training plans on the horizon and possibly turn into a bundle of muscle-mush, why not mark down the New Mexico/Texas Challenge Road Race on your calendar for April 24 and set your goal to train this winter. Sponsored by the Lea County Museum here in Lovington (as well as the West Texas Running Club in Lubbock and the Western Heritage Museum in Hobbs), the race will have three courses: a 5K, a 10K, and a Half Marathon. So get your running shoes on and your feet in gear to hit some of the area’s great local trails so you can be conditioned in time for the spring event. If you’re not a racing fiend, then you should still plan on attending the event since there’s also an exposition for sports gear and clothing for hikers and cyclers (as well as runners) on Saturday, April 23rd. This is one event meant to be inked in on your calendar to stave off the winter doldrums and keep you focused on peak sports fitness all year.

With the PRCA Rodeo slated to hit Lea County Fairgrounds next year on August 10-13 it might be time to starting thinking about your next rodeo prospect you know, the one that might turn into a big money maker so you might be the next Bill Etbauer and earn 3 million. Check out some online resources for your next rodeo mount like a Double Cash Too gelding for only 3500, a Dash for Cash mare at 8,000, or a West Coast Whiz gelding at 10,000. You know the competition is going to be tough if you’re up against the likes of Dane Hanna in Steer Wrestling, Kenna Squires in Barrel Racing or Guy Allen in Steer Roping, so the best thing you can do is be prepared well in advance with a mount that has bloodlines, brains, and heart that any champion would covet.

We wrote earlier about the wonderful snow skiing options that are available to those living in or near Lovington, so it seems only appropriate that we make sure you’re in tip-top-shape to hit the slopes once that first snow hits. Being conditioned makes for more smooth runs with less risk of injury and that’s pretty much a win/win, wouldn’t you say? Here’s some even better news — even if you’re not a skier the following conditioning tips are beneficial to any sport or just plain old daily living. What are you waiting for? Get cracking.Strength Training is critically important to maintain the core strength needed for a day of skiing. Muscular strength helps a skier to not only be in control of a situation but to relax as well both elements equally important to performance and conditioning recovery time. Since skiing primarily uses the leg muscles try to incorporate as many activities pre-season as possible things like bicycling, hiking, or other active sports where the focus is on your quadriceps.Flexibility is perhaps the most important physical conditioning component when it comes to preventing sports-related injuries, and this is especially true in skiing since you’re going to need your muscle-connective tissues to extend to their max without compressing joints. To best get this managed with regard to ski conditioning, focus your efforts on your upper legs, back, shoulders, hip, and torso to keep your tendons and ligaments flexible and strong so joint injuries can be avoided.Cardiovascular workouts should be done 3 to 5 times a week for 30 to 45 minutes per session in anticipation of ski season. To prep for the first snow you should be looking at activities like bicycle riding, skating, swimming, or running. A lot of very serious skiers use roller skis as an activity to keep them in peak condition off-season since the activity uses the same muscle groups and kinetic motions as their snow-friendly counterparts. And if your best-intended plans for pre-season conditioning fall flat, you might want to consider getting aligned with a personal trainer for a few weeks prior to your first slope escapade just to make sure you’ve done as much as possible to prevent that ever-present sideline threat that could keep you out all season.

The Lovington High School Wildcats should definitely be celebrated for bringing home 16 State Championships in football, and nothing should ever be taken away from that achievement. In fact, we hope the trend continues for many years to come. But Lovington as a city is more than football due to its unique climate and geographic location close to some mighty popular sports venues. There’s rodeo and skiing. Bicycling and running. Auto racing and tennis. Motor cycle racing and track and field. And on and on it goes. So yes, while we fully celebrate the Wildcats football legacy dating all the way back to 1951 we need to look forward to the many other diverse sporting activities this city of close to 10,000 can enjoy outside of a Friday night frenzy. And just as it produced stars like NFL linebacker Brian Urlacher and golfers Ronnie Black and Sean Murphy, we bet there’s going to be future namesakes in other sports beyond these three. So it’s with that premonition in mind that we keep tabs on all sporting activities in and near this wonderful county seat of Lea County, New Mexico.
